candyclawstitleCandy Claws is Fort Collins’ claim to indie rock fame. Being the only band still based in Fort Collins to appear on indie-media-mecca pitchfork.com, they have made their presence known both locally and internationally as an innovative and enjoyable musical entity. Since Radiohead bucked the system, making record labels mostly obsolete to a certain extent, it seems bands have been using modern technology to further their music, playing off conventional rock pretenses in hopes of reaching an audience jaded by an oversaturated industry.  Candy Claws is most definitely one of these bands.

Formed by Ryan and Kay, with Wesley on drums, and surrounded by an amorphous cluster of various local, young musicians, Candy Claws has been carving a niche to hide in, in an otherwise remote experimental indie rock scene. Their Wilsonian waves of digitized pop and folk-rock have established them as a facsimile sweetly familiar to bands most local music dorks hold in reverence (i.e. Animal Collective, XTC, My Bloody Valentine, Mum).

Now, as Irish record label Indiecater records have recently reissued their incredible debut album—(In the Dream of the Sea Life)—they have taken to bending the rules of rock.  Instead of packing up in an old van and touring the country, headlamps and guitar effect-pedal trunks in tow, they’ve opted to tour from their hometown.

Besides being exponentially cheaper (i.e. free) and ecologically savvier than conventional rock tours, this online tour seems to relish in the temporal alternatives the internet offers modern music-lovers.  They’ve chosen to perform acoustic versions of every song off their debut, each song appearing in a video on a music blog based in cities around the globe. After the old album’s songs run, they will premiere the new album as a series of music videos in a similar fashion.

Now, one classic night—or one horribly cursed night in some instances—of rock songs can extend beyond those thirty to forty minutes of cramped, sweaty, rock-show pretense. These videos, with hallucinatory camera work and mysterious lighting, serve as a collection of moments, extending across the whole planet, starting in a neighborhood far closer to yours than you would imagine.
